Finding the right collaborator is a key step toward achieving success in almost any endeavor. For a major remodel, the right partner becomes even more essential. Luckily for Adrienne and Andrew Lopez, they discovered the perfect collaborator in Kristy Arends of Revelation Studio while planning their home remodel in Denver’s historic Whittier neighborhood.
“Revelation Studio was a lifesaver for our kitchen/living room remodel and helped push our vision to the next level,” says Adrienne Lopez while describing the project. “Not only did working with Kristy and her team make our lives easier in navigating all the choices and hurdles that come with a major remodel; they ultimately helped save us money by keeping the project on time and by working seamlessly with all of our contractors.”
The home is more than 100 years old, so updating the classic charm for a modern
sensibility wouldn’t be the easiest task. The Lopezes were looking to add an expanded pantry, extra storage and a kitchen island, all while maintaining the magic that had drawn them to the home when they purchased it more than a decade ago.
“This is a really unique tall skinny brick home,” says Kristy. “We’ve got tall ceilings but not a lot of width. The area is full of historic homes with original, traditional elements. My client’s tastes were more modern/eclectic. So we found a way to marry their tastes in a way that felt like it fit within the home.
The trio decided on a modern traditional aesthetic for the renovated kitchen, keeping some of the unique elements that gave the space character while adding in the sleek comforts of a modern design.
“The previous owner was a brick mason and built this interesting arched opening but it really didn’t connect with anything else in the space,” says Kristy. “We wanted to make it a feature and center the gas range beneath it. Really make it the focal point and heart of this tricky little galley kitchen.”
Preserving the original brickwork was crucial, as was keeping the charming cast-iron wood-burning stove in the attached lounge area. The new design rockets the kitchen into the modern age with stunning white quartz countertops and backsplashes that provide sharp relief against the black-painted bricks and cabinetry.
Of course, the most important component of bringing a kitchen into the modern era may be the appliances, and for that, the trio landed on the Signature Kitchen Suite brand. Tucked under the brick arch that imbues the kitchen with the feel of an old-world restaurant, a six-burner gas pro range adds to the sense that a professional chef could be at work here. Two ultra-high burners can crank out up to 23,000 BTUs, while two ultra-low burners can be dialed down to as little as 100 degrees in order to accommodate the most delicate of culinary demands. An LCD screen and smart knobs provide digital displays and can be connected to WiFi, allowing temperatures to be adjusted remotely through the Signature
Kitchen Suite app.
The stainless-steel French door refrigerator also connects to the app, allowing for remote operations. Inside, 24 cubic feet of storage capacity provides an abundance of space for any leftovers, while dual ice makers offer luxurious spherical ice “cubes” that melt more slowly in beverages than traditional shaped ice.
Across from the fridge, in the newly added kitchen island, the drawer-style microwave is nestled discreetly — saving on counter space — as is the PowerSteam dishwasher.
It all comes together in a unique kitchen brimming with character and charm.
“We knew that the space limitations were going to dictate the layout and that there was really only one way to do it successfully,” says Kristy. “It was a tall order for a small space.”
Adrienne says they are thrilled with how it all turned out. “The end result far surpassed all of our expectations and we had plenty of laughs along the way as well,” she says. “Our kitchen remodel was very positive and we are so glad we took the leap of faith to engage in this process.”
An impeccable collaboration between owners and designer is at the heart of this success, and Adrienne says she can’t recommend Revelation Studios enough. In fact, Kristy even went the extra mile in creating an original piece of artwork to incorporate into the remodeled living room.
“My clients were really clear with what they wanted up front AND they really trusted me to guide them through the process,” says Kristy. “In the end, our clear communication and mutual understating of the aesthetic gave us a finished product they love and LOVE to show off to their friends and family.”
