  • Small Town Roots, Big Kitchen Dreams

Crystal and Josh Hector have built many modern, farmhouse, and rustic kitchens in the years they have owned and operated their company, Elite Builders. So they had plenty of inspiration to draw on for this modern farmhouse kitchen when it was time to build their own home in Castle Rock. "Because this home backs to a ranch, it fits perfectly," Crystal explains. The couple partnered with Julie at JRG Design to select a clean color palette that blends whites and grays with dark wood with light accents for natural warmth. The subway glass backsplash is subtly multi-colored instead of flat white so that it has personality and gives the impression of movement while complimenting the island. Josh did much of the work on this project and installed the shaker-panel cabinets and range hood himself. He chose to widen the walkways around the island to a full 5 feet so there is plenty of room in the kitchen to socialize because the Hectors entertain frequently. "We hosted 30 people this past Thanksgiving, and they all fit comfortably in the kitchen." Josh elaborates. The Jennair refrigerator features a unique obsidian interior that is inspired by volcanic glass and makes the colors of fresh produce pop under the theater-style LED lighting. Crystal says, "Everyone in the kitchen stops and says 'wow' when they look in the refrigerator." Complimenting the refrigerator is a Jennair dishwasher that is so quiet that one of the Colorado's Best Kitchens photographers actually accidentally opened it during the middle of a wash cycle when we arrived because he didn't realize it was running! Don't worry, though. Jennair dishwashers project a discrete light on the floor to indicate they are running so you can check the cycle status before you open them. Crystal and Josh's advice to homeowners who are building their dream kitchen? "Hire a designer. There are so many options out there that it is easy to get lost without someone to help narrow down your style, wants, and needs." This kitchen turned out to be a dream come true for the Hectors. They had a wonderful experience working with JRG design and are looking forward to enjoying the kitchen for years to come. Reflecting on the final outcome, Crystal expressed, "This was a big moment for a couple of kids from small towns. We're overwhelmed with joy at how everything turned out." #big #kitchen

  • The New Designer on the Block

M ona Wilson has spent the past 25 years creating dream homes for clients. When it was finally time to build her forever home, she drew on that experience to create this unique design near Denver's Highlands and Berkley neighborhoods. The house that originally occupied the property was 115 years old. As the remodel began, Mona quickly realized that extensive renovations—from the foundation to the electrical system—would be required. She pivoted to a new build and managed the entire design and construction process herself, careful to keep the character and beauty of the Highlands/Berkley area intact. This was one of Mona's first design and construction projects in Denver, so she didn't have her usual team of contractors to call upon. One of her biggest challenges was finding and hiring local companies that would understand the personal nature of her design and trust her judgment. Early in the project, Mona had to push back when she was questioned about her decision to include a coffered diamond pattern on the floor and ceiling and had contractors try to change the locations of a wall and the refrigerator. "I said, "No, you won't. I designed it the way I want it," Mona laughs while recalling. "Taking on this entire project as a new designer here in Denver was definitely a challenge. However, I learned a ton about Denver and the design world in this part of the country and loved every minute of it." Mona describes the kitchen style as "classic modern farmhouse" and explains that it combines her favorite design elements, curated over an entire career in interior design. High windows made of rain glass let in abundant light, and double crown moldings take full advantage of the high ceilings. A large quartzite island is the centerpiece of the open-concept kitchen, and warm, natural wood columns provide visual distinction between the living and dining areas. The custom, gunmetal and brass range hood perfectly accents the marble and brass backsplash above the 48" rangetop. While this design is undeniably stunning, it is also intelligently segmented with functionality in mind. The 45-inch Ruvati entertaining sink has dual faucets and a built-in prep station. Two Monogram refrigerator drawers, a trash compactor, and the Monogram dishwasher—all hidden in plain sight by custom panels—are built into the island within easy reach of the sink. This gives Mona easy access to everything she needs to prepare delicious meals, even when guests inevitably congregate in the kitchen. Down on the end of the island is the baking station. A Monogram wall oven with French doors allows items to be removed from the oven without awkwardly leaning over the door. The design is inspired by commercial kitchens and features a chain-drive mechanism so both doors can be opened simultaneously with one hand. Paired with the wall oven is a Monogram 5-in-1 oven with Advantium Technology, which allows it to be used as a convection oven, toaster oven, warming/proofing oven, precision cook oven, and microwave. At 1.7 cubic feet, this oven features a large 16-inch turntable, allowing full rotation of a 9" x 13" casserole dish. The real hero of the baking station is the Monogram hearth oven. It emulates the performance of a wood-fired brick oven and is perfect for baking everything from Neapolitan-style pizza to soft artisanal bread. This oven does more than bake, though. Capable of temperatures up to 1,300 degrees, it is also great for roasting vegetables and fish. Mona's family loves to eat well and entertain frequently, so it was important for the kitchen to flow seamlessly into the dining area and outdoor space. To accomplish this, the entire wall between the dining room and the patio is made of large, retractable, sliding glass doors that can be opened to blur the line between interior and exterior. The dining area includes another feature perfect for entertaining, the Monogram Wine Sommelier. This meticulously-engineered refrigerator has storage for up to 106 bottles and two temperature-controlled zones to keep red and white wines at the ideal temperature for serving or letting bottles age. When asked why she went with Monogram, Mona said, "I've had Wulf and Subzero, but the features Monogram offers are just better." Mona is thrilled with how her vision has become a reality and feels that all the long nights she spent designing, drawing, and hand-picking every element of this stunning kitchen have finally paid off. She looks forward to enjoying the final product with friends and family and is excited to join the Denver design community as she builds her new business.

  • Eco-Conscious Elegance: Exploring the Beauty of Recycled Glass Countertops

In the quest for sustainable living and eco-friendly home design, choosing the right countertop material can make a significant difference. Homeowners today are increasingly turning to sustainable countertop options that not only enhance the aesthetics of their kitchens or bathrooms but also align with their environmental values. Among the various eco-conscious choices available, one material stands out as a leader in sustainability: recycled glass countertops. Recycled glass countertops are crafted from a blend of post-consumer or post-industrial glass and non-toxic resins, cement or concrete. This innovative combination results in a durable, attractive, and environmentally responsible surface. Here’s why recycled glass countertops have become a top choice for sustainability enthusiasts: 1. Utilization of Recycled Materials: One of the primary advantages of recycled glass countertops is their use of recycled content. These countertops repurpose glass bottles, windows, and other glass waste that would otherwise end up in landfills. By transforming waste into a valuable resource, these countertops help reduce the environmental impact of glass disposal. 2. Low Environmental Footprint: Manufacturing recycled glass countertops requires less energy compared to producing traditional stone countertops like granite or marble. The process involves crushing and melting glass, which consumes less energy and emits fewer greenhouse gasses. Additionally, the use of non-toxic base materials further contributes to a lower environmental footprint. 3. Unique Aesthetic Appeal: Recycled glass countertops are available in a wide array of colors and patterns, depending on the source of the glass. Each countertop is a unique mosaic of glass fragments, creating a stunning visual effect that can complement various design styles, from modern to eclectic. 4. Durability and Maintenance: Contrary to common perception, recycled glass countertops are exceptionally durable. The material binding the glass particles adds strength and resilience, making these countertops suitable for everyday use. They are also non-porous, resistant to stains, and relatively easy to maintain with regular cleaning. 5. End-of-Life Sustainability: At the end of their lifecycle, recycled glass countertops can often be recycled again, promoting a circular economy. The materials can be crushed and reused in new countertops or other glass products, minimizing waste and conserving resources. Other Sustainable Countertop Options While recycled glass countertops shine as a sustainable choice, several other eco-friendly countertop materials deserve recognition: Bamboo Countertops: Made from bamboo, a fast-growing and renewable resource, bamboo countertops offer a natural, warm appearance while supporting sustainable forestry practices. Reclaimed Wood Countertops: Salvaged from old buildings, barns, or other structures, reclaimed wood countertops lend rustic charm and promote the reuse of existing materials. Concrete Countertops: When made with eco-friendly additives and sourced responsibly, concrete countertops can be an eco-conscious choice due to their durability and potential for incorporating recycled content. In the pursuit of sustainable living, choosing the right countertop material is a significant decision. Whether opting for recycled glass, bamboo, reclaimed wood, or other eco-friendly materials, homeowners today have a range of sustainable countertop options to suit their tastes and values.

  • Designer Roundtable: Cabinetry Trends

We asked four talented designers in Colorado to give us their expert opinion on these trends in cabinetry. Here is what they had to say.   1.   Between painted or natural wood cabinets, which do you believe can create a more timeless look? Elizabeth :  I think a painted white cabinet can be extremely versatile, and, timeless and provide longevity in any aesthetic.  With that said, I think it also comes down to the character of a house, and being consistent and respectful of the current aesthetic.  Kimberly:   White cabinets will never go out of style, but I love the natural beauty of wood cabinets. Unpainted natural wood cabinets are a classic and timeless look that has endured many trends and styles, and has lasted for centuries. They instantly add warmth to a room, are very versatile, and can go with your changing interior styles and décor. Barb & Catherine:  We think stained wood is a more timeless look but with a simpler finish.  Glazes tend to go in and out of style.  Paint colors tend to be trendier as well, depending if you go with a color beyond a neutral one. Kim G : A white kitchen will always stand the test of time.  You will see it in new homes as well as historic homes. Wood can also be timeless, but again I would nod to colors and finishes from the past.  Quarter-sawn white oak is very popular now but was used regularly in older homes, particularly in Craftsman style.     2. Are there any smart technology features you predict we will see trending with cabinetry in 2024? Elizabeth:   I think we will see more integration with smart technology in cabinetry in regards to cabinet lighting linked to Smart Home devices. Setting scenes and schedules for these lights to work together to create an ambiance in a room. I'm also getting a lot of requests to incorporate charging stations in the kitchens I design. Kimberly:   I feel we will see more hidden charging stations in cabinetry. We have technology in our fridge that allows us to see items inside - why not your pantry or cabinets?  Barb & Catherine :  We are hoping to install more In-cabinet automated lighting for cabinets such as a sink base where it can be very dark, drawer bases, etc., not just cabinets that have glass.  Also, touch lift-up doors seem to be popular with our clients. Kim G:   Countertops with a charger built in that you set your phone on.  Whole house controls expand to all items including appliances and plumbing. There are options for motorized cabinetry doors, which aid in lifting higher doors and heavier base cabinets such as a trash pull-out.  3. What are some pros and cons to consider when deciding between open or closed shelving? Elizabeth:  When I'm discussing functional storage with a client, we walk through their current space and decide what the storage needs are for their new kitchen. I like a mix of closed and open shelving, to give my clients flexibility and versatility. Making sure a space has adequate functional storage for cereal boxes and mix-matched coffee mugs, doesn't mean you can't have some open shelving for plants, pottery, and personalized items.  Kimberly:  The main items to consider for open shelving are your storage needs and if you can maintain the shelves - so they are not crammed with misc. items. Open shelves are great in small spaces - they can make a kitchen feel larger, but if the shelves are not maintained and they turn into a catchall shelf - the kitchen can instantly look smaller and cramped.  Barb & Catherine:  Open shelving is great for displaying cookbooks, photos, etc. In our mountain community, we are always fighting dust. Not a deal breaker, but a consideration. Kim G:   This is a very personal decision.  I always advise my clients to look at how they live when deciding on open shelving.  I generally recommend a balance, having plenty of wall cabinets, yet open shelving is great in special areas, such as coffee bars or entertainment areas. #Cabinetry #Trends

  • How to Add Texture and Depth to your Kitchen

. Kim: Where does texture have the most impact when creating a tactile kitchen experience? Kathryn E: Texture draws attention. Therefore, areas where you want to draw attention or create a focal point benefit from the most texture. I'll often amp up the texture on an island or decorative hood . Eryn: I like using cabinet hardware. Selecting a material that gives character and additional detail while adding color to create a focal point is a simple way to create something that visually stands out and adds a textural element . Nikki Foret: Close attention to the cabinetry plays a significant role in adding texture to a kitchen design. You can add depth and interest with the finishes used, the décor style of the door, and using distressing or heir looming techniques to give the cabinets visual appeal and character. This is something that could be achieved by simple refacing of cabinets or with all-new cabinetry. Kathryn J: I feel a common misconception is staying neutral with your backsplash. It is fun to bring color, patterns, and texture through tile. And the good thing about it? So much easier to change up than cabinetry colors once you want a change. Kim: What is the most interesting material you have used to provide texture? Rhi: GLASS! I have been obsessed with using glass everywhere I can lately! Like a classy homage to the ostentatious 80s—I love the glamor that it adds. I've used it as a backsplash and even in a shower. Kathryn J: Have you ever heard of Tambour?! It is flexible wood panels that can be used for walls, ceilings, pole wraps, wainscoting, and doors. Such a fun texture to wrap an island in! It works well in any color and brings such a statement. Nikki: I love using natural materials to add texture and visual interest to a space. Reclaimed wood has been very fun to use; it's better for the environment than new wood and has so much character to add to a space. Whether using it as floating shelves or to wrap a hood or leg posts, it's sure to give your kitchen the depth and texture you crave. Eryn: I agree! Wood adds warmth, texture, tone, and details that most other finish items lack. Kathryn E : Once, we repurposed whisky barrel staves for the backside of an island. Not only did the wood staves add texture, but the streaked staining from the whiskey added character. Kim: What is one easy way to add texture and depth without significant renovations to your kitchen? Nikki: A backsplash can do wonders for a kitchen at a fraction of the cost of a full remodel. Changing a plain white square tile to an intricate, colored, arabesque shape gives the kitchen a completely different feel and vibe. Kathryn E: Yes, replacing and upgrading backsplash tile is not hard, but it makes a huge impact. Rhi: I agree, swapping out the backsplash with something creative! Sometimes you can even install the new backsplash on top of the old backsplash without having to demo it. Also--paint the backsplash! I've painted an outdated natural stone backsplash before, and it turned out amazing. Matte paint on top of the natural texture of stone gives just the right pop of subtle texture. Eryn: shelving and backsplash are two major wow items that do not have to be expensive. These can both add texture and detail to dress up an otherwise boring space. Kathryn J: Believe it or not… floating shelves! There is this traditional mindset that kitchens should be all closed cabinetry, etc. But it doesn't have to be! Think about those few areas that you could expose and feature your best dishes and décor. The material you choose for the shelves themselves could bring another element of warmth, and the materials you decide to highlight brings a personal touch.

  • Parker Perfection: Embracing Contemporary Design

By DJ Reetz , Photos by Tommy Rhyan - Rhyan Productions Sometimes the best course of action to create something that feels brand new is to reimagine what you already have. For Mike and Shannon Fronapfel, the desire to add a fresh feel to their home led them to a sleek, modern update that completely transformed their living space. The Fronapfels had paid off the mortgage on their home in Parker, a picturesque exurb southeast of the Denver metro area, and were ready for something new. Rather than pulling up the roots they had established over all those years, selling the home, and buying something else, they decided a reimagining was in order. And with the help of designer Jenn Lowry of JL Interior Design, the Fronapfels created a stunning contemporary aesthetic for their home. Jenn describes the new design as modern transitional, incorporating a sleek, clean color scheme and eye-catching accents. White quartz countertops accentuated with gray veining make up the surface area of the new kitchen, establishing the crisp, modern vibe. Cream colored cabinetry around the perimeter of the kitchen juxtaposes with the dark grey features incorporated into the kitchen’s island, and brushed steel mosaic backsplashes add an understated flair. “The overall two-tone aesthetics is a beautiful color match to the mosaic stainless backsplash,” says Jenn of the design choice. It’s a strikingly modern look that is sure to age gracefully. Central to the remodel is the Dual Fuel Range from KitchenAid. Mike says a gas stove was a must for the new kitchen, and this model combines the raw power of a gas range with the consistency of an electric convection oven. The front burners put out up to 20,000 BTUs, ensuring a professional-quality experience on the cook top, while the built-in smart appliance features allow for the oven to be set and preheated remotely through the KitchenAid app or a connected smart device. Oven settings can even be saved for seamless future use. The kitchen’s smudge-resistant black stainless-steel fridge, also from KitchenAid, fits the two-tone aesthetic perfectly, adding to the crisp overall look of the space. A wealth of independent storage areas inside the refrigerator help to keep a variety of different perishables at the perfect temperature and humidity while preventing cross contamination of odors and flavors. A programmable water dispenser allows for automatic dispensation of specific amounts in ounces, cups or liters — no more holding a water bottle while waiting for it to fill. Rounding out the set of KitchenAid appliances is a three-rack dishwasher in matching smudge-resistant black stainless steel. The dishwasher features a microfiltration system and sensors that continually monitor soil levels during wash cycles, adjusting wash time and water temperature to ensure dishes always come out sparkling clean, no matter how dirty they are going in. The dishwasher features a deep, angled third rack that can accommodate most standard sized drinking glasses or bowls, and a drying bar to wick away moisture for a spotless finish. The kitchen island, covered in the stunning yet demure veined quartz, contains a number of notable additions as well. The island features a roll-out trash can, discreet built-in drawer microwave and plenty of storage for pots and pans; all features Jenn says were lacking in the kitchen’s previous layout. An additional bar and beverage area adds space for entertaining or a quick lunch, and Jenn says she was extra mindful in designing the feature so that it wouldn’t interfere with the foot traffic or overall flow of the kitchen. For the floor, the Fronapfels decided on luxury vinyl plank flooring. This option provides the kitchen with the timeless look of hardwood without compromising durability or ease of cleaning — and it won’t break the bank either. All the elements of the kitchen come together to create a homey yet refined space, one that nails the vibe of modernism without feeling fleeting. Mike says the couple loves how it all turned out, and the redesign exceeded their expectations. When asked how they plan to utilize this new space, Mike answers enthusiastically: “More guests and house parties!” And what’s the key to such a successful project? Both Mike and Jenn have similar answers. “Find a good contractor that does quality work and is a good communicator,” says Mike. “Good communication is key!” says Jenn. “I really enjoyed the entire process in working together with the client and general contractor.” Those who hope to have a similar outcome to their own remodel, one defined by met or exceeded expectations rather than regret and displeasure, might want to take note: make sure you are communicating your desires and that those desires are being listened to and taken seriously. JL Interior Design’s philosophy is providing service to clients on any budget! Whether your needs are strictly professional advice or you would like an interior project/remodel professionally managed. We offer design and staging services for any budget! • Designer Roundtable - GREEN BY DESIGN

Incorporating Eco-Friendly Features into Your Kitchen Remodel Interviewed by Mari Morales Designers: Ashley Christensen, Jacqueline Durant, Tricia Turk, Vicky Petrauskas 1. If someone was looking for a “greener” kitchen design, what is a must-have? Vickie Petrauskas: Energy star appliances are a must have to help reduce energy and water use in your home. Home automation systems also help to connect the various systems in your home and can be a helpful tool in monitoring your energy usage. Tricia Turk: Solid wood cabinets are the first and best option for a greener kitchen. Always look for GREENGUARD Gold Certification on the cabinetry to ensure there is no harmful off gassing and low to no VOCs. Jacqueline Durant: Induction cooktops are at the top of everyone’s list when designing a sustainable kitchen. Not only can induction cooktops and ranges save energy, but they offer a cleaner carbon footprint. They work by transferring heat directly to your cookware, instead of heating the surface of your cooktop. This allows you to waste less energy while cooking and your pot is heated quickly and evenly. Ashey Christensen: Utilizing materials that already exist is, in my book, the number one way to bring a greener outlook to your space. Our landfills are full of discarded building materials, but if you’re able to give an item a second life that’s one less discarded piece. It could be a gorgeous vintage sink, a reclaimed wood counter for your island, or a salvaged antique cabinet full of character. These pieces are often crafted from higher quality materials and can become the show stopping moment in your kitchen, so they’re worth the hunt! 2. Are there any technological upgrades someone can put in their kitchen that would help save energy or reduce water waste? V.P.: Energy star rated products will greatly help save on energy and water usage. There are also so many great eco-friendly options for your kitchen, like induction cooktops or electric coils. If you prefer to cook with gas, research appliances that have a low BTU output. The lower the output, the more energy efficient the product is! New touchless faucets are also engineered with auto-shutoff features that keep your faucets from running. T.T.: Technology in the appliance industry has seen some major advances and it’s very exciting. Dishwashers that can be programmed to wash only sections of the dishwasher thus saving on water and energy. Refrigerators with proper cooling and humidity will reduce food waste. Homeowners, one by one, are seeing the advantage of induction cooktops and are making the switch with ease. J.D.: There are so many smart kitchen appliances that offer great energy savings. Smart ovens, cooktops and microwaves have built-in sensors and pre-programmed cooking settings. These features result in more precise cooking times and temperatures, reducing energy waste caused by overcooking or exposure to high temperatures for extended periods. Also, with the help of smartphone applications or voice assistants, smart kitchen appliances can be controlled and scheduled remotely. This allows users to turn off or adjust appliance settings even when they are not at home, minimizing unnecessary energy consumption. A.C.: I’m a big fan of induction cooking for lots of reasons, but its impact on the health of your home and lowering your carbon footprint are big perks! Modern dishwashers do an amazing job of reducing water waste. Updating your dishwasher can save gallons of water per wash and be more energy efficient. 3. What are some high-quality, sustainable materials for the kitchen? V.P.: Natural fabrics like organic cotton, sustainable/recycled wood, bamboo, cork, recycled tile, fluorescent or LED lights and low VOC paints are great materials to incorporate into a greener kitchen. You can also lower your waste by using reusable materials to store your food. T.T.: Luxury sustainable materials can be found in beautiful countertops and full backsplashes in many new materials that blend recyclable materials. One in particular is a Sintered Stone from Lapitec. This is an all natural product made from minerals but offers many benefits, such as preventing the spread of germs and microbes, resistance to high heat, scratches and stains. It also has full-body through color. J.D.: There are a number of high quality sustainable materials that can easily be incorporated into any new kitchen remodel. MDF cabinets are a great option, due to the fact that they are composed of wood fibers, shavings and other materials that would normally go into the landfill. Recycled glass countertops are a fun look that is achieved by recycling glass into bright funky designs. We’ve also seen some amazing countertops made out of reclaimed wood. They can offer a really unique look while also repurposing something to give it a new life. A.C.: Tile is my all-time favorite material and there are amazing options that are being manufactured sustainably using recycled materials like clay. Looking for manufacturers in the US is also a great option when we’re trying to be kinder to our planet since there’s less pollution created when products don’t have to travel the globe.
